Sheep farming is a popular economic livestock activity in tropical countries but it is not a familiar livestock livelihood activity in the Eastern Province. Low quality feed utilization ability and grazing ability of the sheep has encouraged the Department of Animal Production and Health to introduce sheep farming project in 2019 under PSDG.
Cluster goat village, a project with the objectives of transforming traditional subsistence level goat farming into a dynamic and market oriented business entity was implemented in the Addalaichenai Divisional Secretariat division in Ampara district. This project was funded by the Ministry of Mahaweli, Agriculture, Irrigation and Rural development. The line ministry spent Rs. 4.2 Mn. for this project. 20 farmers benefited and each farmer was provided material assistance to the value of Rs. 200,000/=.
